# Timelines

Timelines are data visualisations that you can configure to plot the Work items of your Sheets as bars on a canvas. This is helpful to track and schedule work as a roadmap, Gantt chart, etc.

Creating timelines

To create a new timeline in a Sheet, click the Timelines button in the toolbar above the table and choose Create timeline.

Enabling and disabling timelines

To enable a timeline in a Sheet, click the Timelines button in the toolbar above the table and choose the relevant timeline. To disable, click the button again and choose None, or click the icon in the status bar below the table and choose Disable timeline.

Editing timelines

To edit settings of an existing timeline in a Sheet, click the Timelines button in the toolbar above the table, hover with the cursor over the relevant timeline and click the Edit timeline icon on the right of the menu item. Available settings include options to configure the bars, dependencies, markers, and the canvas of the timeline.

Copying and deleting timelines

To copy or delete a timeline in a Sheet, click the Timelines button in the toolbar above the table, hover with the cursor over the relevant timeline and click the Edit timeline icon on the right of the menu item, then click Copy or Delete at the bottom left corner of the dialog.

# Bars v5.3.0

This feature is part of the JXL Standard edition.

  • Start date, End date
These options determine which Fields' or columns' values the start and end of the bars on the timeline are based on. You can choose from Fields or columns that are of type Date picker, Datetime picker (Time stamp), Date range picker (Interval), or a formula column of an equivalent data type. By default, the Jira system Fields Start date and Due date are set.

  • Colour
This option determines the colours of the bars on the timeline. By default, the Jira system Field Work item colour (or Issue colour in JXL for Jira Data Center) is set.

Coming soon: JXL Advanced

We will soon introduce the new JXL Advanced edition, including game-changing capabilities such as additional Timeline features to plot your Jira work your way, and various Chart types for rich data visualisations.

With this release, the current JXL for Jira Cloud will become JXL Standard. You will have the opportunity to optionally upgrade to JXL Advanced to unlock these new features. JXL for Jira Data Center will remain one app, without editions, and all JXL Advanced features will be available there. We are putting the finishing touches on these big new developments, with a target release planned for late 2026 or early 2027.
